Reading Notes: Japanese Fairy Tales (Lang): Part A

For this week's reading notes, I chose "Japanese Fairy Tales" by Andrew Lang (link above). The first one I read was titled "The Cat's Elopement". The first thing I noticed was that there were a lot of descriptive details around the characters, especially Gon and Koma. Having a lot of descriptive details about the characters and their surroundings really helped make the story more like a movie in my head. I also liked that in the story, it was so important for Gon to find a wife even though he was really stubborn and picky. The ending was pleasant in that Gon, Koma, and the princess had gone on to have a lot of children and that they all remained friends.
The next story I was drawn to was the one titled "The Stonecutter". This one was about a stonecutter who would go to a mountain every day and cut out slabs for gravestones or houses. He was a master of his craft and had a lot of customers. The stonecutter did not believe in the myths of the spirit that supposedly lived in the mountain until he heard his voice. After that, all of his wishes came true, and he came home to a new palace, he became a prince, and then the sun, and so on. After wishing to be many different things, he decided to go back to being a man and a stonecutter and learned to be satisfied with what he had.
While I did read all of the stories for section A, these were the two that stood out the most to me because they both had happy endings. There was not really any sad or upsetting parts in the story that did not end happy, and that is the kind of writing I like. I think it is okay to have a few tragic endings here and there, but everybody loves a good happy ending. For my future stories I will try to implement more happy endings while keeping with exciting content.
