Reading Notes: Egyptian Myth and Legend, Part B

For this weeks reading assignment, I am reading part B of the "Egyptian Myth and Legend" written by Mackenzie (link posted above). I really liked doing the part A reading for this unit because all of the stories were different short stories with no continuations. The part B reading was not as great. The part B reading consisted of only three different stories. There were four parts to the story titled "The Two Brothers", three parts to the story titled "The Book of Thoth", and only one part to the story titled "The Tale of King Rhampsinitus". Automatically, when looking at the stories listed for part B, I find that I am only drawn to "The Tale of King Rhampsinitus" because it only has one part. I find that when stories have more than two parts to them, I am not as interested in reading them. I believe that for a story to be considered a short story, it should only have one to two parts in it. When a story has more than two parts, such as the 2/3 stories for this part B reading, I begin to feel like I am reading a full on book rather than just a short story. I also feel like the stories with multiple parts shouldn't be considered short stories, and that they should have just been either an entire chapter or an entire book on their own. This is something I will definitely take into consideration for my own stories this semester. I will definitely keep in mind the length of my stories, and make sure that they could still fall under the "short story" category instead of being able to be considered a full chapter taken from a book. I tend to feel more drawn to shorter stories, and the stories that have multiple parts to them kind of lose their interest.

  1. Hi Ashlyn, I'm a little confused by your post here, but you need to read all the stories, and take notes on them. If you only like stories that are shorter, you can use that criterion when you select which unit to read. If you didn't read the Egyptian stories (and it sounds like maybe you did not?), then read something like Bidpai, which is just the opposite: lots of shorter stories. You don't have anything in your post here that is about the stories, and the goal is to have reading notes that will help you to tell your own story, based on the details (plot, character, etc.) from the story you liked best.
