Week 5 Story: The Ruby Necklace
Authors Note: For this weeks story assignment, I have decided to put my own spin on a short story titled "The Lost Necklace", from the Filipino Popular Tales written by Dean S. Fansler. I have taken this story and make the main characters, the hen and the crow, into humans, and set the story in the present day.
One day, a young woman went to a vintage thrift shop and discovered a necklace. It was a single square ruby surrounded by small diamonds on a silver chain. She knew that she would never be able to find a necklace of that sort for that price again, so she bought it. She wore it out of the store and began to show everyone she knew her newest find.
A few weeks had passed, and her best friend had expressed her love for the necklace multiple times. She finally asked if she could borrow it for one night out, and the owner agreed. Morning comes around and the owner shows up at her friends door to get her necklace back. When her friend answers the door, she is visibly distraught. She had lost the necklace and had spent the entire night looking for it. "Find my necklace now, or I will report it stolen to the police", said the owner. The friend knew that she would be turned in if she did not find it, and appeared frightened. "For everyday that you do not return my necklace, I will take something of yours and sell it.", the owner of the necklace said. The friend knew that, between having her things sold or being arrested, she would rather lose her belongings.
To this day, the friend still has not found the necklace, and so the owner has kept her word and has been seen at thrift stores all over, selling items that are not hers and keeping the profit. Every time a young woman sells an item to a thrift store, it is known that she is getting her revenge on a former friend, who is still looking for the necklace.
Hi Ashlyn! I really do like the cleanliness of you blog space. It feels really stress free reading your story. However the vibe I was getting from your story was not quite clear. The story line was okay, it was just trying to figure out the purpose behind the story that I am struggling with. Such as, is there a moral besides not to lending precious things to friends?
ReplyDeleteHey Ashlyn! I like your story. It was creative and original. I think expanding on the author's note a little more will make the story more clear. Overall, I liked your story and I hope I get to read more from you in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi Ashlyn! I like your story a lot. It shows how someone who makes a mistake will pay for it until that mistake is rectified. Your story is very much your own but I liked reading the author's note and seeing the similarities between the stories. Does she ever end up finding the necklace or does the owner sell things until she gets all of her money back that she payed for the necklace?
ReplyDeleteHi Ashlyn! I like the message of the story to be careful with precious items, especially when they are not your own. I would like to see more in the author's note about the original story, as I did not read the story your was based on. Did one animal borrow something from the other and now has to give up their possessions to repay the other animal?
