Week 3 Story: A Darkened Princess
Authors Note: For this story, I have taken the Disney fairytale of Sleeping Beauty and turned it into a darkened theme of a princess who becomes the villain. Instead of the princess being saved by a prince and living happily ever after, this princess becomes the very thing she spent her whole life being afraid of.
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Isla. She grew up in her castle with her parents, the king and queen. They lived pretty normal lives, except for the fact that they were royalty. They had always lived in fear of a disastrous villain who would one day come and try to cast her evil spell on their precious daughter. Isla, however, was kept in the dark about this possibility. The king and queen did not want to worry their 15 year old daughter, and they felt it best to just not tell her. But, as most young girls do, Isla discovered the secret her parents were keeping from her. She learned of her possible fate, and spent most of her years living in a secret fear of what was to come.
On the night of her 16th birthday, Isla decided to leave her worries in the back of her mind as she enjoyed what was to be the best night of her life. She would spend the night dancing, mingling, and possibly meeting a prince of her own. As she did her hair and makeup alone in her room, she battled with the fear of her possible fate. "This wouldn't happen on my birthday. It's my special night. I have nothing to be worried about.", said Isla to herself in her mirror. She felt that speaking these affirmations out loud, she would be able to convince herself of them. She put the finishing touches on her hair and makeup and began to put on her gorgeous pink ballgown. Her two best friends could not decide on whether the dress should be pink or blue, but Isla finally decided that the pink color suited her curly blonde hair just a little better. She put on her tiara and headed to the ballroom where the entire kingdom was awaiting her grand entrance.
As Isla gracefully floated down the staircase, the kingdom stared in awe of her beauty, for they had never seen such grace and poise come from a 16 year old girl. Isla was met at the foot of the stairs by her parents, and together they walked into the party with their heads held high. Nothing, absolutely nothing, could ruin this night. Isla danced and talked and was having the time of her life. It was time for the king and queen to make a speech for their daughter, and right when the king himself was about to begin, a cold darkness came flooding over the entire room and everyone in it. Isla stood frozen in her fear, for her worst nightmare was coming true. A hideous villain was coming, and what she would do to Isla... no one dared to think about. Before Isla could run to her parents, she felt a burning sensation coming from inside her. She felt the urge to fight, but she didn't know what.
The dark cloud surrounded Isla, and her blonde hair turned black. Her pink dress, black as well. As the cloud moved to reveal Isla, the entire kingdom stood in horror as they realized their precious princess had turned into the villain everyone had feared. Isla let out a terrifying laugh, smiling while staring her parents right in the eyes. "Your precious little princess is gone. The darkness has overcome her. This is who your beloved princess is now. She is dark. She is evil. She is me." said Isla. The queen began to sob, "Isla, this is not who you are! You know who you are!". The king ran towards his now evil daughter, trying to save her from this new darkness, but it was no use. Isla used her newfound powers to push him away, and she began to hover above the ground. "You should all live in fear. Live in fear of me." Isla screamed. Before anyone was able to process what had just happened, Isla disappeared in a cloud of black. She was gone.
A few months had passed since the dreaded night of Isla's 16th birthday, and no one had heard from her or seen her since. The kingdom was always dark. There was no sun, no light, no happiness. The evil Isla had done exactly what everyone was afraid of, she had turned the kingdom dark. She ruled with an iron fist, and the kingdom spent the rest of eternity in utter darkness. Wondering when their sweet princess would ever return.
Hi Ashlyn! I am glad you are a fan of Sleeping Beauty, and that is a story that is coming up in the Grimm weeks later on, so you will want to make sure you read the Brothers Grimm version and think about how to tell a story based on that, instead of just relying on Disney. The idea is to do the storytelling based on the reading you do each week, so all the stories this week are coming from the Classical and Biblical units that people are working on.
ReplyDeleteIsla, I love how you set the scene when Isla was transformed into a dark princess by appealing to our senses by talking about how her hair and dress turned black and that there was a dark cloud surrounding her. I think that it would be interesting to see Isla cast a spell on the kingdom before she disappeared so that it could explain the darkness that loomed over the kingdom after she left and make the readers understand the feeling of Isla's negativity being present in the kingdom even when she herself was not!
