Topic Research: Mermaids
For this weeks project, we were told to pick one story out of the four we had chosen last week. I have decided that, after some research, I will be using mermaids as my storyline. They have always been extremely interesting to me, and I am able to make many different stories. I could do a story about a man meeting a mermaid, falling in love, and then them having to find a way to be together. I could do a story about a girl who turns into a mermaid when she touches water and has to keep it a secret from everyone. I could even do a story about a mermaid who has to learn to be a human. There are multiple different ways I could go with this one topic, and I think I will be able to get the most research done for them. Of course, one of my research links is Wikipedia, but I will also be able to find multiple different websites full of research on them. I can even use theories and rumors to help my stories. Mermaids have been rumored to exist for thousands of years, and no one actually knows if they are real or not. Most people say they are not, but they fail to remember that most of the ocean has yet to be explored. Mermaids are incredible creatures that have been portrayed in hundreds of stories. Some say they were evil and would kill sailors, others say they are very nice and would help sailors. Some even think that mermaids hide among us as humans. There are so many different theories that the research possibilities are endless.
For my first story, I have decided to use a section from a book called "The Brown Fairy Book" by Andrew Lang. The section of the book is called "The Mermaid and the Boy". This story is about a king going on a long awaited voyage to a nearby island to settle disputes. As the ship hit a rock and death was upon them, the king spotted a mermaid in the water. The mermaid stated that the only way to save the ship and everyone on it was if the king swore to give her his first born child. The king agreed, and years later their first born had grown into a young man. The king and queen sent their child on his own and encountered many obstacles and creatures along his way. In the end, the prince met a princess and they lived happily ever after. I think this story is a good one to come back to while doing my final project because it focuses more on the original tellings of mermaids and their more evil intensions.
For my second story, I have decided to use is called "The Mermaid Wife" by W. W. Gibbings. This story is about a man seeing many mermaids and mermen dancing on the shore of a beach. He met a damsel who had been shunned by her friends and decided to stay on land instead of in the water. He offered her shelter in return for her becoming his spouse. She agreed and they went on to have many children. When one of the children brought the once mermaid something from her past home, she decided to flee back into the ocean. The husband ran after her, but he was too late. The mermaid was reunited with her first husband and left her life on land behind. I do like this story as it has a more modern feel to it, but it is incredibly short and I feel like it is lacking some details. If I were to use this story for my final project, I would try to make my own story have more details in it as well as a longer storyline.
For my final story, I have decided to use a story called "Brauhard's Mermaid" written by F. A. Brockhaus. This is a very, very short story about a man who married a mermaid. Because she was a mermaid, she lived in his bathtub. The friends of the husband despised the mermaid because of the creature she was. The finally decided to poison the mermaid and because of this, the now widowed husband never remarried. He gave the money he had been given from his wife's death to the poor. I personally feel like if I was to ever use this story for my assignment, I would have to make it much, much longer and add in a lot of details. This story was very short and seemed more like a summary than a full on story. I would still use the basic plot line of the story, but I would develop the characters and the setting a lot more to give it some substance.
