Reading Notes: Forty-Four Turkish Fairy Tales, Part A

For this weeks reading assignment, I have decided to read from "Forty-Four Turkish Fairy Tales", written by Ignacz Kunos. (Link)

Out of all the stories in part A, I do think the one titled "Fear" was my favorite. The story was about a boy who did not know what fear was, but only that his mother did not like it. He then went on a long journey to find fear. He had many obstacles along his way, but in the end, he discovered what fear was after opening a soup dish and having a bird fly out. He then celebrated with the town, had his mother brought to him, and they lived happily ever after.
Another story I liked from this reading was titled "The Wizard-Dervish". I enjoyed this story because it was not something I had ever heard before. The main character of the story was promised to the Dervish on his twentieth birthday, and met a maiden. Then, he and the maiden went on a long journey and ended up in a inn, where the boy was transported back to his wedding on the day he was taken. The original bride had gotten tired of waiting for him, and so the boy married the maiden.
The final story I liked was titled "Patience-Stone and Patience-Knife". I also really enjoyed this story because the poor maiden had no idea what her future held when the bird came and told her what it had to say, and once she finally did know, the Arab girl stole her man away from her. She felt defeated and told all of her worries to a stone and then attempted to commit suicide. The man stopped her, realized that she was his true kismet, and sentenced the Arab girl to death. The man and maiden married, had her mother sent to the palace, and they all lived happily ever after.

I really liked all of the stories, but these three were definitely my favorite from part A. I feel that they were all so different, but all so similar at the same time. They all involved a main character having to go through something hard in order to live happily ever after. While each story was different, they were all written in the same style, and they were very interesting to read. For my future  stories, I might try to make them the same length as these stories, and include the same amount of detail. It's a good way to write a short story, but without leaving out any details.
